5th Visit to the Gambia

On 6th Feb. 18 students and staff will set off from Portlaoise College to the Gambia in West Africa. The 14 students will accompanied by teachers Amanda Cripps, Ciara Kennedy, Patrick Travers and Sean O’Neill. This will be the 5th time that the school has visited the Gambia.

The main aim of the trip is to provide resources for the Jamisa Yiriwa Nursery school. In order to do this we had to raise €3000. This was achieved through a number of fundraising activities such as a Xmas market, a raffle and numerous bagpacking days in Tesco Portlaoise.

Another aim of the trip is to carry out repair and maintenance work in the school. Our students will paint the kitchen, classrooms and the outside yard.

Over the course of the trip we will also visit Brikama general hospital where we will donate medical supplies that were generously given to us by the staff and parents of Portlaoise College. All our students and staff forgave their checked in luggage so it will be possible to take over 400kg of medical and educational resources.

On the last day of the trip our students will carry out lessons in the Nursery School and afterwards run a sports day for the 205 students of the school. We hope that this experience will give our students a real sense of the importance of teamwork and giving back to the less fortunate.

This journey has shown our students that by working together great things can be accomplished. The 4 members of staff who have organised the trip are so proud of the leadership, kindness, teamwork and drive demonstrated by the 14 students prior to Portlaoise College’s return to the Gambia.
